FROM THE EDITOR
Please feel free to send in things you'd like to share with our community of chatters

Isn't it nice to have the holidays behind us?  What a sweet time our family had this year, and I hope you did, too.  May 2007 bring each of you love and laughter, health and happiness, peace and playfulness.  We're gearing up for Mardi Gras, the second post-Katrina Mardi Gras.  It should be a great Mardi Gras season.  If any of you will be visiting New Orleans for Mardi Gras, please let us know!!

Our Birthday Bash was a big success.  What fun!  Thanks to the generosity and hard work of Amazing, prizes were given to the winners and even to those who assisted in the games.  You can see the beautiful prizes at: http://www.starlink-irc.org/special/tenth/index.html. All of those SL-IRC logo items and more are available for purchase at:  http://www.cafepress.com/slirc.

Your humble editor received a very "special" gift from Amazing.  Those of you who know me best will truly appreciate the significance of it, too.  In light of my office supply mania, I was delighted to receive the pen Amazing sent.  The fact that the body of the pen is a stretchy, squishy, rubbery, blue GECKO was merely coincidence.  I'm certain of it!  The color of this fellow is suspiciously close to the color of Itsy ( see http://www.cafepress.com/imi .  I'm betting they're related somehow!!  Thanks, Amazing, you're a gem (probably a beautiful sapphire with all the blue around here)!

Speaking of birthdays!  Please send in your birthdays and anniversaries (and mention your home channel) directly to us at newsletter@starlink-irc.org, with NEWSLETTER in the subject line, or bug your channel owner to gather the birthdays and anniversaries of the other chatters in your channel to send them in each month.  Only send in birthdays with the person's permission, however.  Some people may not want to have their birthdays published.  For the birthdays we do publish, please be sure to message folks on their birthday to wish them well!!  If you know them well enough to have their e-mail address, send them a card.  It'll make their day.  :)

Due to some changes in the staff mail processing, it has become very important that you put NEWSLETTER in the subject line of all email being sent in for newsletter publication.  Thanks!!

Once again, if any of you have an idea for a new monthly column, quarterly column, or special article, please let me know!  I'd love to add another new column this year.  Thank you!

Makk hasn't any new channels to report this edition.  That hasn't happened in a long while!  When you visit other interactive places online, do you tell them about StarLink-IRC?  Do you mention StarLink-IRC in your profile on game sites and such so people will know to visit you there?  When you make new friends, bring them home to StarLink-IRC to visit.  Perhaps they will want to open a channel with us!

P.S. Don't miss CookingOnTheWildside this issue!  We're making the chicken dish tonight and I can hardly wait!!

FREE ADVICE
Read this and make a copy for your files in case you need to refer to it someday. Maybe we should all take some of his advice!

1. Do not sign the back of your credit cards.Instead, put "PHOTO ID REQUIRED."
2. When you are writing checks to pay on your credit card Accounts, DO NOT put the complete account number on the "For" line. Instead, just put the last four numbers. The credit card company knows the rest of the number, and anyone who might be handling your check as it passes through all the check processing channels won't have access to it.
3. Put your work phone # on your checks instead of your home Phone. If you have a PO Box use that instead of your home address. If you do not have a PO Box, use your work address. Never have your SS# printed on your checks. (DUH!) You can add it if it is necessary, but if you have It printed, anyone can get it.
4. Place the contents of your wallet on a photocopy machine. Do both sides of each license, credit card, etc. You will know what you had in your wallet and all of the account numbers and phone numbers to Call and cancel. Keep the photocopy in a safe place. I also carry a Photocopy of my passport when I travel either here or abroad. We've all heard horror stories about fraud that's committed on us in stealing a Name, address, Social Security number, credit cards.
5. We have been told we should cancel our credit cards immediately. But the key is having the toll free numbers and your card numbers handy so you know whom to call. Keep those where you can find them.
6. File a police report immediately in the jurisdiction where your credit cards, etc., were stolen. This proves to credit Providers you were diligent, and this is a first step toward an Investigation (if there ever is one).

But here's what is perhaps most important of all:

7. Call the three national credit reporting organizations Immediately to place a fraud alert on your name and also call the Social Security fraud line number. The alert means any company that checks your Credit knows your information was stolen, and they have to contact you by Phone to authorize new credit.

Now, here are the numbers you always need to contact about your wallet, etc., has been stolen:
      1.) Equifax: 800-525-6285
      2.) Experian: 888-397-3742
      3.) Trans Union: 800-6807289
4.) Social Security fraud line :800-269-0271

We all hope you had a WONDERFUL holiday season and we welcome all of you to the start of StarLink-IRC's 11th year!

StarLink-IRC's 10th Birthday was a HUGE success with many games played, prizes won and stories told.

There are some thank you's in order for those who helped to make it such a success.
  • Thank you LindyM for taking the time to make up the questions and hold the trivia game!
  • Thank you NOLady for creating the madgabs and thanks to DebA for holding the madgabs game!
  • Thank you NOLady for creating the clues for the scavenger hunt and to all the helpers who helped to 'man' the secret channels!
  • Thank you to Itsy for setting up the 'secret' channels for the scavenger hunt which was the most channels we've had for a scavenger hunt!
  • Thank you DarkHawk for putting on the color show for a continuous 14 hours which I believe is a record time!
  • And special thank you to all of the users who came out to enjoy the games, recall some memories and share some of their fondest stories of StarLink-IRC from over the years.

Dear John

by Nicholas Sparks
ISBN 0446528056, published October 2006 by Warner Books
Available in Hardcover, Hardcover Large Print, Audio and Compact Disc
Fourth on the New York Times Bestseller List

John, on leave from the Army, meets Savannah who turns out to be the love of his life. They are extreme opposites. A high school dropout, he has extensively partied, drank way too much alcohol, lived very promiscuously, and has been constantly in trouble. Alternatively, Savannah is a bit prudish, a chaste teetotaler who has lived a controlled, strictly regulated life and goes to church regularly.   They meet in North Carolina, where she is helping to build a house for a needy family.  He rescues her purse from the ocean when it falls off a pier, and they spend time together. They fall in love. They part with promises of keeping in touch, a future together and off he goes to Germany.  Savannah dates others but her heart is with John. Then 9-11 takes place. With great patriotism, John re-enlists. "Out of sight, out of mind" gets stronger. Finally, Savannah "can wait no longer" and marries another. Ergo, "Dear John."

The story is narrated by John, and is, therefore, told from the male perspective.  The author, Nicholas Sparks, gives pleasant descriptions of North Carolina, where the story is basically set. He does not really bring in the effects of war much, nor does he describe the war. It could have been any war.  This is his 12th novel and he has had several of his novels made into films, including one, "Message in a Bottle" that starred Kevin Costner and Paul Newman, grossing over $118 million.  This was the first book of his I have read and, frankly, if I ran across another, I might or might not pick it up. If I were living in the fifties, I would probably be more interested. It is, however, an easy read and Sparks writes well enough to hold your attention. His story telling ability is good enough and I would recommend it if you just want light reading that captures your attention without need for deep thought.

It is a predictable but comfortable love story, set in modern times with a value system from the fifties, an old-fashioned love story, complete with painful heartache, fragile romance, patriotic sacrifice and ultimate tragedy. It is a simple story, without confusing characters or complex situations. Give it a shot if this is the kind of romance fiction you enjoy.

SHOULD THIS EMPLOYEE HAVE BEEN FIRED?

This has got to be one of the funniest I've heard of in a long time. I think this guy should have been promoted, not fired. This is a true story from the WordPerfect Help line which was transcribed from a recording monitoring the customer care department. Needless to say, the Help Desk employee was fired, however he is currently suing the WordPerfect organization for "Termination without Cause." This is the actual dialogue of a former WordPerfect Customer Support employee (now I know why they record these conversations) starts here:

Employee--"Rich Hall, Computer Assistance; may I help you?"
Customer--"Yes, well, I'm having trouble with WordPerfect."
Employee--"What sort of trouble?"
Customer--"Well, I was just typing along, and all of a sudden, the words went away."
Employee--"Went away?"
Customer--"They disappeared."
Employee--"Hmmm So what does your screen look like now?"
Customer--"Nothing!"
Employee--"Nothing?"
Customer--"It's a blank; it won't accept anything when I type."
Employee--"Are you still in WordPerfect, or did you get out?"
Customer--"How do I tell?"
Employee--"Can you see the 'C:' prompt on the screen?"
Customer--"What is a sea prompt?"
Employee--"Never mind, can you move your cursor around the screen?"
Customer--"There isn't any cursor; I told you, it won't accept anything I type."
Employee--"Does your monitor have a power indicator?"
Customer--"What's a monitor?"
Employee--"It's the thing with the screen on it that looks like a TV. Does it have a little light that tells you when it's on?"
Customer--"I don't know"
Employee--"Well, then look on the back of the monitor and find where the power cord goes into it. Can you see that?"
Customer--"Yes, I think so."
Employee--"Great. Follow the cord to the plug, and tell me if it's plugged into the wall."
Customer--"Yes, it is."
Employee--"When you were behind the monitor, did you notice that there were two cables plugged into the back of it, not just one?"
Customer--"No."
Employee--"Well, there are. I need you to look back there again and find the other cable."
Customer--"Okay, here it is."
Employee--"Follow it for me, and tell me if it's plugged securely into the back of your computer."
Customer--"I can't reach."
Employee--"Uh huh. Well, can you see if it is?"
Customer--"No."
Employee--"Even if you maybe put your knee on something and lean way over?"
Customer--"Oh, it's not because I don't have the right angle, it's because it's dark."
Employee--"Dark?"
Customer--"Yes - the office light is off, and the only light I have is coming in from the window."
Employee--"Well, turn on the office light then."
Customer--"I can't."
Employee--"No? Why not?"
Customer--"Because there's a power failure."
Employee--"A power.......a power failure?.... Aha, Okay, we've got it licked now. Do you still have the boxes and manuals and the packing stuff your computer came in?"
Customer--"Well, yes, I keep them in the closet."
Employee--"Good.. Go get them, and unplug your system and pack it up just like it was when you got it. Then take it back to the store you bought it from".
Customer--"Really? Is it that bad?"
Employee--"Yes, I'm afraid it is."
Customer--"Well, all right then, I suppose. What do I tell them?"
Employee--"Tell them you're too stupid to own a computer...

Thanks once again to those who send in articles. Please encourage your channel folks to send in important dates for the month, channel chatter, and general news!  It shows our network's sense of continuity when we can share these events with those outside the channels we normally visit. Our network is special in the way channels support and and encourage each other like a community. For those newer to our community, our Sunday evening #Townhall meetings are an excellent opportunity to come and meet other folks that we would not normally encounter. Come join us for these meetings (okay, not so much a meeting as a block party with the occasional announcement, eduacational presentation, or sometimes even guest speakers on interesting subjects.  Join us there when you can.
