FROM THE EDITOR
Please feel free to send in things you'd like to share with our community of chatters

My apologies for the lateness of this newsletter.  Preparations for our vacation to Allentown, Pennsylvania, to visit Gngrmama and to Delaware to visit excited had me swamped before we left and I’m just now getting around to putting this issue together post-vacation.  What fun we had!  We so enjoyed meeting excited and her family.  We had the surprise blessing of meeting Char of #40Something while we were there.  She drove four and a half hours each way to share a meal and some laughs with us.  It’s always so fun when we get to visit our online friends or have them visit us.  We had a wonderful visit from BEING and Blu last month.  After more than a decade of chatting with someone, it’s so special to finally get to hug them!  If any of you would like to see the photos from these visits, just message me online or stop by #40Something.

It is with a heavy heart that I share news many of you already know, but for those who do not, we received word that over a month ago TBW of #Trivia_Dreams passed away in his sleep.  As a long time resident and channel owner of StarLink-IRC, he will be missed.

As most of you know by now, Momma’s husband, affectionately known to us as FatBoy (despite his recent victory over the bulge), passed away while we were on vacation.  Our hearts and prayers are with Momma and her family and all who loved her husband, John.  Please stop by #Momma^s_House to share your condolences and encouragement with Momma often in the coming, difficult days.  Momma has been there for so many of us in our times of sorrow.  I know she will gather strength from the love and prayers and nearness of her online family now.

Thanks so much to Amazing’s sister for stepping up to bat in Wildchild’s absence to provide us delicious recipes.  We’re going to have Shortcut Shortcake for dessert tonight!

Classic Layered Salad

8 Cups of iceberg lettuce
3/4 Cup of sliced red onion
2 Cups of frozen peas
7 slices deli smoked ham (approx.) chopped
1/2 Cup miracle whip
1/4 Cup Parmesan grated cheese
1 Tbsp. sugar
1 Cup Mozza shredded cheese
2/3 Cup chopped tomatoes

1. Layer lettuce, onions, peas and ham in a large straight sided serving bowl
2. Mix dressing, parmesan and sugar. Spread over salad to seal. Cover. Refrigerate several hours or overnight
3. Top with shredded cheese and tomatoes just before serving. Toss gently

Makes 8 servings. 1 Cup each

This classy dessert is yummy and looks pretty. The best part is it's ready in minutes!

Shortcut Shortcake

1 tsp. grated lemon peel
1 Cup cool whip whipped topping
8 slices of bought pound cake
2 Cups sliced strawberries
2 Cups sliced kiwi

1. Add lemon peel to whipped topping
2. Place 1 piece of pound cake on each plate
3. Top with fruit and whipped topping

Jazz it up a bit: Toast or grill the pound cake slices.

  Mexican Style Lasagna

1-1/2 lb. ground beef
1/4 lb. (4 oz.) VELVEETA Mexican Pasteurized Prepared Cheese Product with Jalapeno Peppers, cut up
*I use just the regular VelVeeta because the girls think that the Jalapeno  Peppers are a bit too hot.*
3/4 cup TACO BELL HOME ORIGINALS Thick 'N Chunky Medium Salsa
6 TACO BELL HOME ORIGINALS Flour Tortillas
1/2 cup KRAFT Shredded Cheddar & Monterey Jack Cheese

PREHEAT oven to 400°F. Brown meat in large skillet; drain. Add 1/4 cup water and Mexican VELVEETA; stir until VELVEETA is melted. Remove from heat. Stir in salsa.
SPRAY 8-inch square baking dish with cooking spray. Spread 1/4 of the meat mixture into dish; top with 2 tortillas. Repeat layers 2 times. Top with remaining meat mixture; sprinkle with shredded cheese. Cover tightly with foil.

BAKE 30 minutes. Remove foil. Let stand 5 minutes before serving.

Serving Suggestion
Serve with a crisp green salad topped with your favorite KRAFT LIGHT DONE RIGHT Reduced Fat Dressing.

Visual AHA!
Show an individual serving on a bed of shredded iceberg lettuce. Top lasagna with a small serving of sour cream or guacamole.

The Road
By Cormac McCarthy

ISBN 9780307387899
Published September 2006
Paperback published March 2007
Pulitzer Price for Fiction 2007
Oprah Book Club #57

Often prophesied, never quite believed, the final nuclear annihilation has taken away the known world. Nothing much moves on the ravaged landscape save the ash in the wind. Bitterly cold, the wind blows gray snow. In a world seemingly totally devastated by mankind, a father and son strengthen their deep bond in their struggle for their very survival. The setting and the action are not as important as the focus on father and son and their love. This book is a fable, a prophecy and a warning. Death is a major issue. Billions have died; animals, plants, birds and fish are dead. When they reach the coast:  "At the tide line a woven mat of weeds and the fibs of fishes in their millions stretching along the shore as far as eye could see like an isocline of death."  Most of the few survivors are barbaric and cannibalistic.

The man is dying; they are starving. They are stalked by the unseen and the unknown. Deep faith and belief carry them on and the father instills a strong faith and direction in his son. This is one dynamic story, hard to put down even with the extremely disturbing, ongoing journey.

McCarthy wrote "All the Pretty Horses," and a few other novels. I saw him interviewed on television, the second interview he had ever given, the first one on television. He appears a contented soul to himself, a man who is comfortable with himself wherever he may be. He said he did not care if no one read this book but he would not mind if someone did. His honesty was apparent.

I initially read this book in a rushed manner; I slowed down and pondered a lot of new thoughts. I intend to read it again, much more slowly. The story is telling; the relationship and bond between parent and child are compelling; the writing, itself, is superb. It is no wonder this book won the Pulitzer Prize this year, as well as many other awards. Read this one and take your time reading it and thinking about it. There are some serious thoughts to be pondered.

"THE COMPANY YOU KEEP"
ANONYMOUS
It Is Better To Be Alone, Than In The Wrong Company
Tell me who your best friends are, and I will tell you who you are. If you run with wolves, you will learn how to howl. But, if you associate with eagles, you will learn how to soar to great heights. "A mirror reflects a man's face, but what he is really like is shown by the kind of friends he chooses." The simple but true fact of life is that you become like those with whom you closely associate - for the good and the bad.

The less you associate with some people, the more your life will improve. Any time you tolerate mediocrity in others, it increases your mediocrity. An important attribute in successful people is their impatience with negative thinking and negative acting people. As you grow, your associates will change. Some of your friends will not want you to go on. They will want you to stay where they are. Friends that don't help you climb will want you to crawl. Your friends will stretch your vision or choke your dream. Those that don't increase you will eventually decrease you. Consider this:

• Never receive counsel from unproductive people.
• Never discuss your problems with someone incapable of contributing to the solution, because those who never succeed themselves are always first to tell you how. Not everyone has a right to speak into your life. You are certain to get the worst of the bargain when you exchange ideas with the wrong person.
• Don't follow anyone who's not going anywhere. With some people you spend an evening: with others you invest it.
• Be careful where you stop to inquire for directions along the road of life.
• Wise is the person who fortifies his life with the right friendships.
Happy moments? Praise God
Difficult moments? Seek God
Quiet moments? Worship God
Painful moments? Trust God
Every moment? Thank God

If you see people without a smile today ... Give them one of yours.

BUZZARD: If you put a buzzard in a pen that is 6 feet by 8 feet and is entirely open at the top, the bird, in spite of its ability to fly, will be an absolute prisoner. The reason is that a buzzard always begins a flight from the ground with a run of 10 to 12 feet. Without space to run, as is its habit, it will not even attempt to fly, but will remain a prisoner for
life in a small jail with no top.

BAT: The ordinary bat that flies around at night, a remarkable nimble creature in the air, cannot take off from a level place. If it is placed on the floor or flat ground, all it can do is shuffle about helplessly and, no doubt, painfully, until it reaches some slight elevation from which it can throw itself into the air. Then, at once, it takes off like a flash.

BUMBLEBEE: A bumblebee, if dropped into an open tumbler, will be there until it dies, unless it is taken out. It never sees the means of escape at the top, but persists in trying to find some way out through the sides near the bottom. It will seek a way where none exists, until it completely destroys itself.

PEOPLE: In many ways, we are like the buzzard, the bat, and the bumblebee.  We struggle about with all our problems and frustrations, never realizing that all we have to do is look up!

Sorrow looks back, worry looks around, but faith looks up! Live simply, love generously, care deeply, speak kindly and trust in our Creator Who loves us.

Thanks once again to those who send in articles. Please encourage your channel folks to send in important dates for the month, channel chatter, and general news!  It shows our network's sense of continuity when we can share these events with those outside the channels we normally visit. Our network is special in the way channels support and and encourage each other like a community. For those newer to our community, our Sunday evening #Townhall meetings are an excellent opportunity to come and meet other folks that we would not normally encounter. Come join us for these meetings (okay, not so much a meeting as a block party with the occasional announcement, eduacational presentation, or sometimes even guest speakers on interesting subjects.  Join us there when you can.
