New CService rep Scottie is now on board .. welcome to the net, Scottie.

We have a special notice from Being and Blu:
BEING & Blu_Star on a Road Trip June 2007
Aloha fellow Starlink-IRC friends!  BEING and Blu are going to be driving around 4000 miles and would love it if they can meet some of you for coffee along the way.  If anyone lives near or on the route, and wants to meet up with them, please email Blu at trip@bigislandweb.com so they can schedule you into their itinerary.
They are starting their trip off flying from Kona to Chicago, leaving May 24th, landing May 25th.  They’ll be driving from Chicago,IL to Portage Indiana and staying with Blu’s Mom & Dad until the afternoon of May 27th.  From there they will be driving to Taylor MI to see Blu’s sister and brother-in-law, and staying the night there.  They will leave the next day, May 28th, and driving to Toledo, Ohio where they will meet up with Blu’s little cousin Bill and his family for lunch or dinner, and then off to Defiance Ohio where they will be staying through June 2st to see Blu’s son James, race at Oakshade raceway, on Friday June 1st.

They will be leaving on June 3rd for Memphis TN, and spending the night there.  The morning of June 4th they will be touring Graceland and then hitting the road again.  They should arrive in Hammond, LA right around dinner time (hint hint), and spending the night in that area.  Leaving on June 5th they will zip up to Crater of Diamonds National Park in Murfreesboro, AR, to do a little diamond hunting (wish them luck – Blu would like a new diamond ring!).  They will spend the night there and mine some on June 6th.  They will either stay the night or drive to Ft. Sill, OK, and should be in Lawton on June 7th at the latest.  They will stay there until June 9th visiting Blu’s son Robert, his wife Danielle and also 2 Grandsons, Christopher who will be 21 months old and little Jacob, who will about a week old, give or take a day or 2.  From Ft. Sill they will be heading towards Albuquerque, NM and staying the night of June 9th.  June 10th they will be heading towards Kingman AZ, and staying the night there.  On June 11th they will be leaving for Reno, NV and spending the night there.  Sacramento is next on their list.  BEING’s daughter Melody and her 2 children, Austin and Michael, live there, and we’ll be staying there on June 12th.  On June 13th they will be heading to Oregon.  They plan on staying in Canyonville, OR by the 7 Feathers casino.  They will leave the next morning, June 14th for Rockaway Beach to visit many of BEING’s family, including his Mother, Sister Laura, Mary & Linda and also a few Brothers, Alan and Dave.  They’ll be there for a couple of days.  Then off to Astoria to ship the van and other belongings.  They plan on flying back to Hawaii via Seattle or Portland, arriving June 16th or 17th.  Below are links to the routes that they will be taking from Portage, IN to Astoria, OR.  You can also visit a website with pretty much this same information at:   http://www.bigislandweb.com/2007trip/index.html

They are both hoping to meet some of their friends from Starlink-IRC, so if you are along that route and want to meet up with them please email Blu ASAP!

The dates listed are subject to change, although not by too much.  Blu will add you to their website if they will be visiting you, and she will also be posting a blog a long the way so everyone knows where they are and some of what they are up to.

State of Fear
By Michael Crichton

Originally published December 2004 in Hardback by Harper Collins

Now available in hard copy, paper back, large print, audio download, audio cassette, dvd, audio book cd and MP3 download

Global warming is the current topic everywhere these days. This frequent New York Times top-ten listed author somehow managed to write a great book of fiction that I missed initially...and I thought I was so "up to date" in my reading. This is the first work of fiction that I remember seeing voluminous footnotes shown, footnotes of sources of scientific data, valid scientific opinion and statistical conclusions. Crichton manages, not for the first time, to get his concerns to his readers while providing a great forum of fiction as enticement.

The book focuses on an environmental group of terrorists who are creating environmental disasters worldwide in order to call attention to global warming. Crichton uses his fiction platform to ask the reader whether global warming is a myth; whether human-caused pollutants are causes of disastrous changes in the climate of the earth; whether facts are being manipulated by scientists, politicians and world leaders. Frankly, before I read this book, I believed global warming was happening as a direct result of human activities. On a recent trip to Antarctica, I saw the Al Gore movie; during my time on the National Geographic "Endeavour" I heard lectures and saw positive proof to confirm the points made Al Gore's movie; in Antarctica, the early melting of the ice shelf, breaking off of icebergs and plight of the penguins, whales and seals became very real. Then I read Crichton's book, followed up on some of his footnotes and studied the graphs and charts included. Now, frankly, I am not certain that earth's inhabitants are causing this big melt or, if in fact, the global warming and melting are even really happening. Crichton has gotten me to thinking - with information just not out there specifically; with facts not widely published.

The fiction is good; the story is compelling; the characters make sense and come alive. If you are dedicated to believing that global warming is, indeed, what it is presented to be in the general media, you may not enjoy reading this book. It will either anger you or make you think; it will cause you to dig deeper; it will probably irritate you that either the scientists, politicians and world leaders are, in fact, manipulating the population majority, or that someone would suggest such a thing.  I personally am still pondering and researching. One thing irritated me - a contemporary writer's name was misspelled in the book. I consider this inexcusable. But, then, that's just me.

To get a full idea of both sides of the global warming picture, read this book. To enjoy a good action, suspense, almost James Bond adventure at times, read it.  Crichton does whip up good suspense and writes in an excellent, creative style.

PETS AND PESTS         Critters   by Momma
If you have questions, interesting facts or suggestions, other notable news concerning pets and pests, please submit them to the newsletter with Pets and Pests in the subject line
Anyone who has a cat or dog is following the news lately. Contaminated pet foods are of great concern! The news media is constantly reporting the newest 'recall', but with so many, the average consumer might be confused.
For the most recent up-to-date recall list, check out http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/petfoodrecall/
This link can also be accessed from  cnn.com .
The latest news now is that a second company has imported contaminated rice protein from China, so check the recall lists often!  For that story go to this link....
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18279643/wid/11915773?GT1=9303

So far all reports are that wheat gluten is the ingredient affected, so read the labels of your pet food before purchasing. However, to be on the safe side, check for 'rice protein' as well.

Although I dislike corn gluten in my pet food, I have been going more towards this lately. One of the problems I have found is weight gain in a couple of my dogs, so measure servings to ensure this is not an issue. As corn is harder to digest, expect some minor gassy issues with your furry family member. These will pass (no pun intended) in time.

Watch your pets closely. Should they show tendencies to drink alot, stop drinking, urinary problems or vomiting, call your vet immediately! If your pet has come in contact with the infected food, if caught early enough, the damage can be managed and a full recovery is possible!

One last note....there are apparently no guidelines in place for pet food safety. Both American and Canadian governments are working towards seeing this change in the future. We, as animal lovers, need to keep the pressure on them to see that this is done in a timely fashion. Let your government official KNOW this situation is unacceptable!

In honor of all the mean moms out there (like me!)

Mean Moms

Someday when my children are old enough to understand the logic that motivates a parent, I will tell them, as my Mean Mom told me: I loved you enough .. . to ask where you were going, with whom,
and what time you would be home.

I loved you enough to be silent and let you discover that your new best friend was a creep.

I loved you enough to stand over you for two hours while you cleaned your room, a job that should have taken 15 minutes.

I loved you enough to let you see anger, disappointment, and tears in my eyes. Children must
learn that their parents aren't perfect.

I loved you enough to let you assume the responsibility for your actions even when the
penalties were so harsh they almost broke my heart.

But most of all, I loved you enough . . . to say NO when I knew you would hate me for it.

Those were the most difficult battles of all. I'm glad I won them, because in the end you won, too.
And someday when your children are old enough to understand the logic that motivates parents, you will tell them.

Was your Mom mean? I know mine was. We had the meanest mother in the whole world! While other kids
ate candy for breakfast, we had to have cereal, eggs, and toast.  When others had a Pepsi and a Twinkie for lunch, we had to eat sandwiches. And you can guess our mother fixed us a dinner that was
different from what other kids had, too.

Mother insisted on knowing where we were at all times You'd think we were convicts in a prison. She
had to know who our friends were, and what we were doing with them. She insisted that if we said we
would be gone for an hour, we would be gone for an hour or less.

We were ashamed to admit it, but she had the nerve to break the Child Labor Laws by making us work We
had to wash the dishes, make the beds, learn to cook, vacuum the floor, do laundry, empty the trash
and all sorts of cruel jobs. I think she would lie awake at night thinking of more things for us to do.

She always insisted on us telling the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.. By the time
we were teenagers, she could read our minds and had eyes in the back of her head. Then, life was really tough!

Mother wouldn't let our friends just honk the horn when they drove up. They had to come up to the door
so she could meet them. While everyone else could date when they were 12 or 13, we had to wait until we were 16.

Because of our mother we missed out on lots of  things other kids experienced.. None of us have ever
been caught shoplifting, vandalizing others property or ever arrested for any crime. It was all her fault.

Now that we have left home, we are all educated, honest adults. We are doing our best to be mean
parents just like Mom was.

I think that is what's wrong with the world today.  It just doesn't have enough mean moms!

Thanks once again to those who send in articles. Please encourage your channel folks to send in important dates for the month, channel chatter, and general news!  It shows our network's sense of continuity when we can share these events with those outside the channels we normally visit. Our network is special in the way channels support and and encourage each other like a community. For those newer to our community, our Sunday evening #Townhall meetings are an excellent opportunity to come and meet other folks that we would not normally encounter. Come join us for these meetings (okay, not so much a meeting as a block party with the occasional announcement, eduacational presentation, or sometimes even guest speakers on interesting subjects.  Join us there when you can.
